Air Force Trio Advances to NCBA Finals

RENO, Nev. – Three members of the Air Force boxing team advanced out of the semifinal round of action with victorious decisions at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) National Championships on Friday, April 11, in Reno, Nev. The Falcons combined for a 3-3 record during the second day of action and currently sit in fourth-place in the team standings.

Junior Dean Chuva opened the night with a unanimous 5-0 decision over Army’s Joe Grohowski in a 112-pound bout. Classmate Jesse Horton advanced to his second straight 119-pound final after taking a split (3-2) decision from Navy’s Huy Truong. Senior Daryn Nelson earned his second victory in as many days, as he decisioned (5-0) Navy’s Chris Bertucci in the 156-pound semifinal bout.

Senior Brian Navin dropped a close bout to Army’s Terrell Anthony in a 139-pound match, while classmate Chris Johnson was retired in the second round of his 195-pound contest with Lock Haven’s Aaron Lynch. Sophomore Cory Tintzman concluded the night with a close heavyweight loss to Mansfield’s Chris Phifer.

Army currently leads the team standings with 29 points, while Navy is in second with 22. Nevada (16) and Air Force (15) are also in contention heading into the final night of competition.
