Volleyball Participates In 2008 Collegiate Beach Nationals

SAN DIEGO, CA – Members of the Clemson volleyball team participated at the third annual Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships on Sunday at Mariner’s Point in San Diego, CA. The Tigers were split into four teams to compete in the four flights. Overall, Clemson’s duos were 4-4 in the tournament to conclude the 2008 spring season.

Kelsey Murphy and Didem Ege had a 1-1 record in Flight A with a three-game win over a team from Wisconsin. In the Flight B bracket, Jeannette Abbott and Leslie Mansfield partnered to defeat a Southern Cal team before falling to a Badger tandem.

Lia Proctor and Meghan Hinemeyer played at Flight C, winning a two-game match over a Trojan team. They then lost to a duo from Wisconsin.

All three teams in the Flight D red pool finished with a 1-1 record for a three-way tie. Clemson’s entry of Danielle Hepburn, …

Beach Volleyball Update: U.S. Results from Weekend Events

In San Diego, Ashley Engle (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Kiley Hall (Costa Mesa, Calif.) of the University of Texas defeated Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos, Calif.) of the University of Southern California, 21-8, 21-12, in the final to win the Second Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship on Sunday.

The volleyball tournament, showcasing the nation’s top women’s collegiate volleyball players, was staged by CBS College Sports Network, along with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the AVP.

Both Engle and Carico have been involved in USA Volleyball’s high performance program for indoor volleyball. Both were members of the 2007 U.S. Women’s Junior National Team that finished fourth at the FIVB Junior World Championship in Thailand. Both were also members of the 2005 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team that finished fourth at the FIVB Youth World Championship in China.

Toreros Finish Second at Collegiate Beach Nationals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego women’s volleyball team finished in second place in the 2008 Collegiate Beach Nationals, falling just three points behind the University of Texas for first place. The Toreros did have two teams win their brackets in the second annual event at Mission Beach on Sunday afternoon.

The tandem of Jaimarie Sutherland and Jessica Nyrop won Flight B by first defeating Nebraska’s Lindsey Licht and Rachel Schwartz in two games, 15-7 and 15-13. In the quarterfinal round, Sutherland and Nyrop downed USC’s Geena Urango and Mychaela Miller 21-16 and 21-17. In the semifinal round, USD cruised past Wisconsin’s team of Nicole Klingsporn and Brittany Dolgner, 21-19 and 21-14. In the championship match, USD down the Texas tandem of Michelle Moriarty and Chelsey Klein in three games, 18-21, 21-16 and 15-6.

Volleyball wins Collegiate Beach National Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The University of Texas Volleyball team had four separate teams play their way through four separate pools to claim the team title at the third annual Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship, Sunday afternoon at Mariner’s Point in San Diego. Eight members of the team competed in the tournament with all four of Texas’ teams appearing in the finals and the tandem of sophomore All-American Ashley Engle and junior Kiley Hall claiming the Flight A championship. The one day tournament is presented by CBS College Sports Network, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the AVP.

“This was a great spring for our program and I was impressed with our growth, commitment and team chemistry,” head coach Jerritt Elliott said. “We competed very well and everyone in our program received valuable experience while our three of our players were with USA Volleyball.”

Huskers Place Third at Collegiate Nationals

San Diego – The Nebraska volleyball team placed third at the Collegiate Nationals held at Mariner’s Point Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers earned a total of eight points in the team-format competition, and was one of only three schools to earn points from all four of its teams. The team of Brooke Delano, Kayla Banwarth and Jordan Wilberger brought home a title in the D Flight, going 4-0 on the afternoon and was one of only two teams that did not lose a match in tournament play. The Huskers defeated the Texas team of Alexandra Lewis and Elizabeth Graham, 21-12, 21-14 in the championship.

Volleyball Places Fifth at Collegiate Nationals

MADISON, Wis.

The University of Wisconsin volleyball team finished fifth at the Collegiate Nationals Beach Championship on Sunday in San Diego.

Texas won the team title with 14 points, downing San Diego, which finished second with 11 points. Defending champion Nebraska placed third with eight points while Southern California edged the Badgers by one point for fourth place.

“All of our teams had a great day,” said UW assistant coach Colleen Bayer, who traveled with the team. “Everyone had a really great time and loved their experience. It made the whole spring worth it for the team.”

Three of the UW teams won their pools. The team of Nikki Klingsporn and Brittney Dolgner won Flight B with a 2-1 win over Geena Urango and Mychaela Miller from Southern California and a 2-0 win over Leslie Mansfield and Jeannette Abbott from Clemson.

The Nebraska volleyball teams wraps up the spring portion of its schedule on Sunday, as they head to San Diego for the Collegiate Beach Nationals this weekend. This event, in its third year of competition, brings six of the nation’s top teams to the West Coast for a day of competition. The event, which is coordinated by AVP Tour and the AVCA, begins at Mariner’s Point in San Diego at 10 a.m. (central) with semifinals and finals taking place later that day.

The six teams involved in the 2008 event include the Huskers, USC, Texas, Wisconsin, Clemson and the University of San Diego. The teams are in two three-team pools, with Texas and San Diego joining the Huskers in their side of the bracket. Top Volleyball Players Storm the Beach

There is only one event in volleyball that takes the best collegiate volleyball teams and has them showcase their beach skills against top competition. That event is the Collegiate Nationals Beach Volleyball Championship, and it arrives in San Diego today.

#1USC (3rd in AVCA poll), #2 Nebraska (5th in AVCA poll), #3 Texas (6th in AVCA poll), #4 Wisconsin (14th in AVCA poll), #5 Clemson (22nd in AVCA poll), and #6 San Diego (25th in AVCA poll) will all be participating in this event and are practicing all day at the game day site Mariner’s Point.

Unlike other Collegiate Nationals championships, the athletes participating in this event are also NCAA athletes. Many of the players have won numerous awards over their collegiate careers on the hard court, including Taylor Carico (USC), Brittany Dolgner (Wisconsin) and Jordan Larson (Nebraska).
