Local athletes excel at Collegiate Nationals

KEYSTONE – Young, local athletes dominated Saturday’s Collegiate Nationals slopestyle event hosted by Keystone with wins in both men’s and women’s skiing and snowboarding events. Three local athletes, who split time between Summit County and college, took first place in slopestyle, with a fourth winner hailing from Vail.

Willis Brown, a Dillon resident and freshman at the University of Colorado, took first in men’s skiing slopestyle, followed by Alex Albers of Western State College, and Brian Bocke of CU.

Brown, who’s winning routine included a cork nine, switch cork nine, a rodeo five and backside switch up, hails originally from Massachusetts and learned to ski at Sugarloaf in Maine. Read full article here

Freeskiers Weather the Storm

After enjoying sunny skies during the first day of practice, skiers and riders were welcomed with a late spring storm to kick off the first day of competition at the 2008 Collegiate Nationals. But Colorado, a state that is famous for rapidly changing weather, lived up to its reputation. By the beginning of the men’s skiing qualifiers in the afternoon,  the skies cleared and Mother Nature showed some love for the Collegiate Nationals competition. Unfortunately, the great winter-like weather didn’t last all day, as the atmosphere faded between an amazing spring day and grueling weather conditions.

The changing conditions didn’t fare well for competitors, as many became confused on speed and how fast to drop into the jumps. Freeskiers Pumped For Comp

An epic blue-bird day starts off practice for the third-annual Collegiate Nationals competitors. Keystone’s A51 Park is renowned nationwide as one of the best parks and home to some of the top riders. For the past two years, the Collegiate Nationals Freeskiing and Snowboarding Open Championships took place in Lake Tahoe, with last year’s competition held at Northstar. The Keystone park crew has set up a sick triple tabletop set ranging from 30 to 45 feet and followed by three rail lines and a showboat quarter pipe to top it all off.

The 2008 Edge® Shave Gel Collegiate Freeskiing and Snowboarding Open Championships will feature strong local Colorado competition as well as athletes from more than 15 states who have traveled to compete. The hundreds of competitors registered for the competition come from Vermont to California and include Washington, Minnesota, Utah and Nevada, among others.
