A51 No Match For Collegiate Nationals Snowboarders

Austyn Williams

After enjoying sunny skies during the first day of practice, skiers and riders were welcomed with a late spring storm to kick off the first day of competition at the 2008 Collegiate Nationals. But Colorado, a state that is famous for rapidly changing weather, lived up to its reputation. By the beginning of the men’s skiing qualifiers in the afternoon,  the skies cleared and Mother Nature showed some love for the Collegiate Nationals competition. Unfortunately, the great winter-like weather didn’t last all day, as the atmosphere faded between an amazing spring day and grueling weather conditions.

The changing conditions didn’t fare well for competitors, as many became confused on speed and how fast to drop into the jumps. Because of the changing weather, event coordinators let Tae Westcott, a freeskiing competitor from Fort Lewis College, take his first run to test the speed of the snow without counting …

Stoked Vibe at A51 for Snowboarders

An epic blue-bird day starts off practice for the third-annual Collegiate Nationals competitors. Keystone’s A51 Park is renowned nationwide as one of the best parks and home to some of the top riders. For the past two years, the Collegiate Nationals Freeskiing and Snowboarding Open Championships took place in Lake Tahoe, with last year’s competition held at Northstar. The Keystone park crew has set up a sick triple tabletop set ranging from 30 to 45 feet and followed by three rail lines and a showboat quarter pipe to top it all off.

The 2008 Edge® Shave Gel Collegiate Freeskiing and Snowboarding Open Championships will feature strong local Colorado competition as well as athletes from more than 15 states who have traveled to compete. The hundreds of competitors registered for the competition come from Vermont to California and include Washington, Minnesota, Utah and Nevada, among others.

The Utes. RECAP!

Utah is a terribly misunderstood state. Though it may be the most conservative state in the Union, the Beehive state has all kinds of hidden gnarliness. For instance: the state snack is Jell-O, and there ain’t much that is more fun than Jell-O. As the Galvanic Crew verified, the 3.2% brew’s of the Beehive state can still get a bunch of sea-leveler’s loose (thanks to the altitude). And check out the natives: JP Walker, John Stockton, the Osmonds, and Roseanne Barr. Talk about wild! It’s practically a casting list for SLC Punk! 2.

CSU RECAP!

St. Valentine’s Day is a painful day for snowboarders. It reminds those wed to the winter the price of the snow life: little to no romance. Next to no money, beanies, a schedule dictated by snowfall, and poor hygiene aren’t much help in securing dates. After a lonely 14th, the Galvanic Design crew was in desperate need of a pick-me up. And pick up they did at the third stop of the Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour at Colorado State University on February 15th.

DJ Gristified cranked the tunes and signaled the end of class and beckoning CSU students out to the three-rail setup on the Lowry Student Center Lawn. The three heats were stacked to the brim with the finest jibbers of the Rockies, and things got kicking as MC Chimpy T and Gristified called the session to order. The roster was filled by Colorado’s usual …
