University of Colorado graduate Michael Jaquet wishes he could have donned a Buffaloes uniform and competed in sports he was passionate about as a college athlete. But back in 1993, there weren’t many opportunities for a collegiate skateboarder.

Still, Jaquet knew there was a place in college sports for skaters and other less-traditional athletes. He eventually joined CBS College Sports Network and, in spring 2006, founded its Collegiate Nationals in alternative sports, including beach volleyball, boxing and wakeboarding.

And with fond memories of his college days, Jaquet decided to bring this year’s event toBoulder.

The top 15 collegiate wakeboarding teams from across the country gathered at the Boulder Reservoir on Friday for a bracket-style tournament where seven athletes from each team went head-to-head to win their school a spot in today’s semi-finals. Four Teams Advance to Semifinals

“Go big or go home.” Not only is this a motto most athletes live by it is reality for teams competing in the quarterfinals of the Collegiate Nationals Wakeboard Championships today. As the competition gets more intense, teams must show their worth to stay alive in the semifinals Sunday.

Sunny skies and water tame as glass gave these riders ideal conditions to go out and show their stuff. However, Colorado’s higher elevation was a struggle for most athletes.

“I was not prepared for the altitude,” said Scott Hopkins from the University of Florida. “I am from Florida and the highest point there is a trash hill.”

Yet the athletes overcame the new surroundings and were still able to throw down on the water.

In the quarterfinals teams must win a majority of their individual heats to make it on to the Sunday semifinals.

Collegiate Wakeboard Nationals, Towed by Malibu, Set for May 16-18 in Boulder, Colo.

(Boulder, CO) – The nation’s top 15 collegiate wakeboarding teams will battle it out at the 2008 Collegiate Wakeboard Nationals from Boulder, Colo., May 16-18.  For the third consecutive year, the Collegiate Wakeboard Nationals is part of CBS College Sports Network’s COLLEGIATE NATIONALS, a festival of events that crowns national champions in 11 categories.  Malibu Boats serves as the official towboat for the event.  The event will be held at the Boulder Reservoir and admission is free.
